Money is a game, and millionaires know this.
Other people might label it as lucky, having a natural “knack” for making wealth, or being born with a silver spoon…
But the majority of millionaires aren’t any of these things! (Which I can personally testify)
In reality, people who become millionaires have a different mindset around money to majority of people in society.
A mindset that trains their brains to attract an abundance of wealth and money into their lives, almost “automatically.”
Millionaires share a different way of thinking.
And after learning, talking and hanging round with several other millionaires—as well as myself—I discovered that there were certain mindsets around money that allowed all of us to earn more of it. (Some of us didn’t even realise what we’re doing!)
I narrowed them down into five actionable tricks millionaires have “etched” into their daily lives to generate incredible amounts of wealth.
By using these simple yet powerful mind tricks, you’ll start seeing a change in the way you look at money, and instantly put yourself on a path to earning more money in your life.
Starting with trick number one.
Trick #1: Millionaires Use Numbers to Trick Their Brains
Have you ever wondered why the price of items are hardly ever whole numbers?
In almost every shop you walk into a $20 item is usually priced at either $19.99 or $19.95. But why?
The main reason why is to trick people into thinking an item is much cheaper than it already is.
JCPenney, an American department store, ran a test in their store to see how customer’s would react to price increase from $19.99 to $20. The results? A 30% sales plummet. People started buying much less, even though the difference in price was one cent!
In Psychology this is known as the Left Digit Effect. We pay the most attention to the first letter we see in a number. So while the difference between both prices is a single cent, the first numbers—one and two—is what we focus on, so trick ourselves into thinking the cheaper price is smaller than it really is.
Millionaires use this exact psychological effect to their advantage by simplifying numbers.
For example, the average person might think that $10,000 a month is too much a big number to attain, and become overwhelmed by the thought of even achieving it. Millionaires on the other hand, break this number down into a smaller one:
“$10,000 per month is $329 per day, so $329 per day is only $14 per hour.”
When you break $10,000 down into its hourly rate, you suddenly realise how attainable achieving this now becomes, and creating a plan to achieve this seems more manageable.
Trick #2: Millionaires Use Promotion Framing When Presented with Choices
Millionaires are aware of the incredible power of Promotion and Prevention framing.
To illustrate what both are let’s say two people, Jessica and Ryan, have been given a task to bake a cake for a birthday party.
Jessica uses promotion framing. So when given this task, she focuses on the positives that she and her friends will get out of it. “I can’t WAIT to eat a delicious cake!” “My friends are going to really enjoy it!”
On the other hand, Ryan is dreading the task, because he is focusing on all things that could possibly go wrong. “What if people don’t like it?”
When presented with a choice, Ryan focuses on what he has to lose, attempting to preserve what he already has.
Ryan uses prevention framing, and is a representation of where most people fall under in life. But science tells us this is a very bad way to get rich.
The obvious yet hardly used antidote to this would be to use promotion framing.
When you focus on the GOOD, the “juice” you are going to get from any choice you make, you tend to make money A LOT faster and easier, because you’ve channelled your focus on what you can gain (not what you could potentially lose).
This means that regardless of whether or not you “fail” at the situation you’re in, your mind is wired to only extract what you gained from it. And this could be as little as trying something new, or simply learning from a costly mistake.
Trick #3: They Study Their Biological Rhythms
People think working harder will get them faster results.
And while this is true to an extent, adopting too much of a “Grind Hard” mindset could actually hinder your chances of making more money.
How? Well, according to a Swedish study, as we work, we fire different neurons in our brain. And if we fire them too much, our brain overcompensates by trying to fire them more efficiently.
As a result, this rewires our brain so now neurons start firing together, so it becomes harder to access important parts of our brain responsible for things like our focus and ability to use logic.
So if you ignore your mind and body’s cry for help, the results can be disastrous.
Yes, though there was a point in my life where I was working long hours, with hopes of becoming successful, in the long term I ended up getting depressed and burnt out.
Once you burnout, you become an emotional wreck. You become unstable and unable to focus. You basically become useless.
This was a hard lesson I had to learn, though I’m happy it opened my eyes to the importance of health, and how fundamental it was to prioritise it, if you want to become rich.
By overworking and ignoring your health, you’re simply borrowing money from your future self, and eventually you’ll have to pay it back – at a hefty interest rate.
Working WITH your body, providing it with what it NEEDS for the long term, is the key to long lasting productivity, and will keep you motivated to earn more money.
Trick #4: Millionaires Use Money to Buy Happiness
Most people think money and happiness are two enemies. That riches aren’t the key to your happiness.
It’s why you’ve probably heard the saying “Money doesn’t buy happiness.”
So why am I saying the complete opposite?
Because millionaires consciously spend money on things that create long-lasting happiness in their life.
Designer shoes (or other materialistic desires) may offer you that initial ‘rush,’ but as time passes, the feeling eventually it fades away, and you start to see it for what it really is… an object.
Buying materialistic things doesn’t offer any long-lasting happiness.
But do you know what does? Time.
Spending money on things that save you time is what really creates true happiness in our lives.
It could be as little as hiring a cleaner, or a meal prep service to deliver ready-made meals to your home.
With that time you bought back, you can use that time you would’ve initially spent on cleaning to spend more quality time with your kids.
Ask yourself: “If I could save one hour per day, what could I do that would make my life happier?”
Would it be spending extra time with your kids, or going to the gym, or winding down to read one of your favourite novels?
Everybody is different, but everybody knows what personally makes their life happier.
Millionaires are fully aware of this, and use this tip as if it were a rule.
They use money to buy time, and with that time bought back, they use it to spend time on things that offer them true long lasting happiness.
Trick #5: They Make Friends with People Who Are More Successful Than They Are
You may have heard the phrase “You’re the average of the five people you spend most time with.”
Well, this isn’t actually true. Science has shown it goes MUCH deeper than this.
Two researchers, Nikolas Christakis and James Fowler, studied the data collected from the Framingham Heart study. One of the largest health studies, spanning over three decades.
And the results they found might surprise you…
For example, if a friend of yours develops obesity you are 45% more likely to gain weight over the next 2-4 years.
But it doesn’t stop there. If a friend of a friend of yours is obese, you are 20% more likely to gain weight over the next 2-4 years, EVEN if you don’t know them…
…And if the friend of the friend of your friend has obesity, you are roughly 10% more likely to gain weight in the next 2-4 years.
In other words, it’s not just your friends that influence you: it’s your greater social circle.
If you spend time with people who are successful, their success, life lessons and positive energy, will greatly rub off on you.
Anyone is capable of becoming rich. What separates those from the ones who don’t is whether you consciously decide to.
- Are you willing to go ‘against the grain’ and do what others aren’t willing to do?
- Do you just want to get rich (like everybody else), or is it a MUST?
- Are you willing to embrace failure and make mistakes on the road to financial freedom?
Most people would answer “Yes” to these questions, but their actions would completely differ from what they claim.
Be the type of person who is okay with the truth (even if it might hurt). As the saying goes, “The truth will set you free.”
Self-awareness is key to making change to anything in your life.
And paired with massive action by applying these 5 mind tricks you’ve learnt here today; you’ll instantly start feeling more confident in your ability to make more money.
